3 Big Lessons from Joel

1. Understanding Your Audience

Understanding your audience is essential to craft a successful marketing strategy.

  • Tailoring Campaigns to Audience Profiles: Creating marketing strategies that resonate specifically with your buyer demographics ensures that messaging and product offerings align with the interests and needs of your customers.

  • Analyzing Audience Behavior: Once you understand your audience's preferences and behaviors, Joel advises on the employing listicles and shoppable pages for landing pages designed to capture the limited attention spans of users driven from paid traffic sources to convert.

2. Using UGC Content Effectively

Instead of traditional ads, pivot to UGC that blends into organic social feeds.

  • Mimicking Organic Posts: Creating user-generated content that mimics the style of organic social media posts tends to be effective for DTC brands. For example, a video answering a specific and real question a customer has had in the past can make the content feel more natural and trustworthy to potential customers.

  • Static Imagery for Messaging: Static images are currently being used effectively in UGC to test out messaging. Joel suggests that this simpler format can still provide significant information into what resonates with the target audience.

  • Importance of Captions/Headlines: The captions and headlines in UGC ads are more important than ever, especially considering recent platform changes that have increased the value of longer-form copy. Crafting compelling and clear messages in these components is key to attracting and retaining customer attention.

3. Crafting Compelling Offers

Once you understand your audience well enough, crafting compelling offers becomes a must.

  • New Customer Offers: Rather than trying to increase AOV, you should consider making the offer attractive enough to ensure the customers first purchase, thereby establishing a relationship that can be developed over time for repeat business.

  • Long-Term Value Over Short-Term Gains: It's not just about getting a customer to make a large initial purchase; it's about delivering quality and earning their trust so they return.

  • Focus on the Consumer's Perspective: Again, offers should be constructed with the consumer's perspective in mind, considering what is most appealing to someone who is unfamiliar with the brand. Use listicles, organic mimicking UGC content and personalized landing pages.

  • Importance of Financial Viability: However, before creating tailored advertising strategies, it's essential to assess your business finances. This allows you to ensure that your marketing efforts can be sustainable and profitable, and that you have the capacity for growth and scaling.
